Tie Rod Ends
T-Rod EndTie rod ends connect the steering rack to the front wheel hub units. These are attached to inner track rod ends(sometimes known as axial joints). Tie rods are a type of ball joint that enables angular movement of one part within the joint, except in the plain in which the joint is operating. This means the steering is not affected by the movement of the suspension (up and down), but the joint is able to ensure no free play in the steering system when turning left or right.
Inner Tie Rod Ends
T-RodThese are the linkages that connect the steering mechanism to the outer tie rod end. There are two types of steering system used, steering box system and rack and pinion system. The steering box system will use inner tie rod ends that can look very similar to the outer tie rod ends. These are becoming less common on passenger cars and are mainly used on commercial and 4x4 vehicles. The more common system is the rack and pinion type. In this case, the inner tie rod ends (sometimes call axial joints) will normally be straight rods with an in line ball joint allowing angular movement that screws into the steering rack and will attach to the outer tie rod end at the other end.
Wishbones
Lower ArmWishbones operate in the same way as track control arms, linking the chassis (sub frame) to the wheel hub unit. However, where as track control arms are mounted at just one point on the chassis, wishbones have two mounting points on the chassis, with a single point at the wheel hub unit. The twin chassis mounting point negates the need for the anti roll bar to act as a tie bar on the wishbone suspension system.
Lower Ball Joints
Ball JointLower ball joints are more commonly used in conjunction with wishbone suspension systems, and are the joints between the wishbone unit and the wheel hub unit. They are used to enable the hub unit to pivot when the steering is operated, while ensuring that there is no sideways movement. Track control arms will usually have the lower ball joint as an integral part of the arm and, therefore if the ball joint wears and shows any signs of free play, the complete arm must be replaced. On wishbone systems the lower ball joint can be replaced as a separate unit.
Stabiliser Links
Drop LinkOn a wishbone suspension system, the anti roll bar is usually attached by a stabiliser link. There are two main types used, a linkage type and a pendulum type. The job they do is identical, the only difference is in the way they are attached to the anti roll bar and wishbone.
Suspension Bushes

Lower Arm Front BushLower Arm Rear BushAll suspension track control arms and wishbones use bushes. These are usually found at the point were the arms or wishbones are mounted to the chassis (sub frame). They can also be found on the anti roll bar, rear suspension arms and stabiliser links. Their function is to allow slight movement of the arm or linkage and reduce noise and vibration. Manufactured from rubber, they are a wear item that must be replaced periodically.

Track Control Arms (Not shown on diagram) See Audi and V/W arms Page
Track control arms act as a link between the chassis (sub frame) and the wheel hub unit. Generally the joint is referred to as an arm if it is only mounted at two points (one on the chassis, one on the hub unit). Track control arms will have the anti roll bar fixed into the outer (Sucentre) bush. This not only helps to controls body roll, but also acts as a tie bar to stop forward or backwards movement of the arSm and thus the hub and wheel assembly.
